I know you. You are a person who dreams of traveling to exotic locations yet never actually does. You have a sneaking suspicion that the way to true happiness is through experiencing other cultures and places, but the closest you come to this is by reading books or watching tv. You are a true blue armchair traveler, but deep down inside of you is a real traveler begging to be freed.
You have a hundred reasons not to travel. I know, I know, you are too busy. Your money is needed elsewhere. You can’t leave your pets for that long. You can’t speak the language. You are too old. You are too young. It’s dangerous. You are scared…
Before you read any further, take a few minutes to write down your reasons for not traveling.
Got it? Guess what, that list you just made, it’s not a list of reasons, (big drumroll here) those are EXCUSES. Tear up the paper right now and don’t look back. Instead do the following:
1. Question Your Assumptions
The first thing I want you to do is question your own assumptions. Many times we hold onto a belief about ourselves or our lives simply because we have never questioned it. Go through your list of reasons one by one and ask yourself, is this really true? If it isn’t, mark it off your list.
2. Find A Solution
Next I want you to go through your list and for every reason that is left, come up with a solution. Don’t stop until all the reasons are marked off your list.
Let’s say you don’t have enough money to take the trip you want to take. Your solution might be to figure out how much the trip will cost and then figure out how much money you will need to set aside each month to save up enough money to take your trip. You might end up having to take the trip at a later date then you wanted to, but you still will get to take the trip.
Once you have a solution mark the item off your list.
Congratulations, you are now the proud owner of a list of reasons you can’t travel that has no reasons on it. You also created a roadmap for how to reach your travel goals. Easier then you thought right?
I’ll leave you with one last thought. Open yourself up to possibility. You owe it to yourself to create an amazing life, taste the unknown, throw caution to the wind and follow your dreams. You get to create the life you want, so create a good one. It can include piles of overtime work or trips to sunkissed islands. You get to decide. There is nothing in your life that you cannot change or that you cannot make room for.
