Who is Karen Klein?

Karen Klein
I woke up this morning and checked out the news only to read an article that both disturbed me and also reaffirmed my faith in humanity. The article was about a women named Karen Klein. Karen Klein is a bus monitor in New York who was verbally harassed by a group of students. A student who witnessed the harassment video taped the incident, put it on you tube and it went viral. Max Sidorov, a recent college graduate from Toronto came across the video and decided he wanted to help her so he set up a fundraiser to send Karen on a vacation (which is turning into the best vacation ever). The goal was to raise $5000 and as I am writing this over $187,000 has already been raised.
Why Help?
We can heal what was hurt in this world. We can show people like Karen that while there is bad in the world, there is also good. Something she said really touched me:”I’m so amazed. I’ve gotten the nicest letters, emails, Facebook messages. It’s like, wow – there’s a whole world out there I didn’t know”. Isn’t that amazing? She already got her vacation in a way, the world has opened up to her.
I love that Max thought that a vacation might heal her. Travel heals. I love that people didn’t stop giving when they hit the $5000 mark. Maybe Karen will be able to travel around the word, maybe she will retire, who knows, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that people care. I hope the number keeps growing and people keep giving. Not just for Karen – for the world, for our children, for our elders, for us – actions speak loudly and I for one am truly touched by people’s generosity. It reminds me of the good in the world. I hope it reminds Karen too.
